How to become a certified company? The Canary Island Banana (Plátano de Canarias) case study

En los medios

In Spain, there are hundreds of certifications that accredit companies’ environmental commitment, alongside measuring and reducing their environmental footprint while boosting sales.

Our colleague, Ingrid Barruz, partner in Lener’s Public Law Division, comments in the article published in the journal Expansión in which the case study of Canary Islands bananas is discussed, which must also bear in mind the sector in which the Company, Plátano de Canarias, operates, as environmental certifications are highly specific depending on the scope of activity.

If we focus on the textile sector, there are certifications for materials, fabrics of even those that oversee the manufacturing system: “The aim is to ensure that the product meets certain criteria and standards, as well as its traceability, from obtaining the raw materials, the manufacturing process, until its arrival in the marketplace.” Remarks Ingrid Barruz.  As examples of the foregoing, the Made in Green certification issued by OEKO-TEX verifies whether an article contains chemical substances  harmful o persons’ health or the OCS-Standard certification of organic content which guarantees the product’s organic fibre content. Meanwhile, in the tourism sector Green Key certification endorses the implementation of sustainable measures in the development of tourism activities while Breeam certifies the degree of sustainability in place in the building of constructions for touristic usage.
